Reduced and Flawed
This engage tries to show the current state of algorithmic trading -- although it confuses algorithmic (i.e. programmatic), expensive-frequency, and microstructure-driven trading. Sadly, the shortcomings in the focus will be apparent to anyone with experience in the participants. Very little empirical work backs up the assertions; and, no theory is incorporated not far from strategies and tactics. Even the rare theoretical notes suffer from inconsistent minutes: hats and epsilons are added or omitted as though they are stark decorations. Further, there is much to disagree with. When a engage mentions the current top high-frequency traders and omits Getco or Lime Brokerage/Fortress Capital, you know something is wrong. Another benchmark: The book repeatedly confuses the speed of execution with the investment holding space.I had hoped to use this book for a market microstructure and trading tack I teach. I'm not safe who or what this book is written for. It obviously requires some precise and financial background. It also very obviously isn't beneficial to practitioners; not even larval ones -this in defiance of it being alleged as "a practical guide." Could it be a textbook for academics? Why would an theoretical need a definition of returns ... and in chapter 8? I'm guessing it's more of a rehashing for educated types who want to know more or less what HFT is -it succeeds first at this level, though the profusion of equations and leaflets citations doesn't make it real approachable at this equivalent either.The book is a sort of review article; a edible fraction of the text consists of references to other texts and articles. There are 20 pages of references for a generously spaced 300 page engage, and probably another 20 pages of text dedicated to citing these references. I was looking patronize to this book but it's a big disappointment. I've worked on proprietary trading desks for on 10 years and have done all aspects of stoned-frequency trading. This book is not written by an expert - she perfectly lists stuff that might be useful - and there's cheap hint she's done any of the work she talks about. If you're in the energy save your money. If you're aspiring to join the exertion you might be worse off after reading it. The book seems more like a commercial device for the author's career and current employer than a pucka effort to add value to the subject.
